Today, I’m proud to have Amie Valpone share her advice and experience with a very important and often forgotten health concern: candida in the mouth (oral thrush).

I like Amie’s article because it shows that there is a place for oil pulling. Oil pulling is not the miracle cure for gum disease and cancer that some say it is — but it is great at balancing the microbiome in the mouth, as Amie shows us.

Amie’s advice is fantastic, and many dentists don’t even discuss this. Many mouthwashes and toothpastes recommended by dentists actually harm the microbiome, upsetting the delicate balance of bacteria in the mouth and allowing for candida overgrowth to occur.

If you have questions about this article or anything related to candida in the mouth, please leave a comment below for Amie. She has helped a tremendous amount of people reclaim their health through clean eating and an anti-inflammatory diet.

Rather than enjoying the energy and passion of my twenties, which were supposed to be the “best years of my life,” I suffered through a decade of chronic illness.

It began as severe leg swelling and chronic pain on a daily basis. By mid-afternoon, it would feel like I was carrying around bricks of water in my legs. I was plagued with digestive issues that left me feeling sick, lethargic, and just plain gross. All of this was my starting place before embarking on my detox journey, which led me to feel younger and more energetic than I had felt in over a decade.

Candida overgrowth is a growing problem in our society due to the overuse of antibiotics, nutrient void foods, stress, and yeast-containing foods.

Candida overgrowth releases over 79 different toxins in your body. It can start to affect other areas of your body and contribute to brain fog, muscle pain, weight gain, joint pain, etc.

candida in the mouth
Oral thrush, or candida in the mouth, looks like a white or yellowish coating on the tongue

Oral thrush looks like a white coating on the tongue. You might see creamy white, slightly raised bumps on your tongue, the roof of your mouth, inner cheeks, gums, tonsils, or back of your throat. This white coating may have a “cottage cheese” appearance.

Western medicine doctors tend to not understand candida unless you have candida in your blood, which is deadly, so I have had to figure out and navigate myself through the trenches of chronic candida.

Now, I am just coming out of a long journey to finally kill off all of the candida that has caused numerous problems in my body from stomach issues to elevated liver enzymes, muscle pain, and brain fog.

I recently experienced candida overgrowth in my mouth (called oral thrush), and I’ve been eager to share a few of the steps I took to help rid my body of candida, in hopes that this information can help you.

It is so important to address the underlying problems of why candida is in your mouth (and body) in the first place instead of just covering up the symptoms. When you start working with an integrative doctor to address the candida treatment for your gut, it’s important to not overlook treatment for your mouth as well. The mouth is another breeding area for the yeast. The goal of candida treatment is to introduce foods and antifungals that will help prevent candida from becoming a systemic issue throughout your entire body.

Following these steps can help improve your overall health, especially Candida in your mouth.

1. Start a round of antifungals to help kill off the yeast.

This must be done with the guidance of your doctor, but you can start doing something called oil pulling with the liquid antifungals, which will help kill the yeast in your mouth.

You can oil pull with extra-virgin coconut oil combined with a few drops of oil of oregano or peppermint/spearmint essential oils. Swish this mixture around in your mouth like you would do with mouthwash and then spit it out into the trash (do not swallow it and do not spit it into your sink).

Try to do this at least two times each day, preferably in the morning and evening. The reason I use coconut oil is because it contains caprylic acid, which is a powerful antifungal. When you combine the coconut oil with other antifungals (such as oil of oregano) you’ll be doubling up on anti-yeast agents to help kill off the yeast so that you have a better chance of getting rid of the candida. For more details, check out the oil pulling page on my blog.

2. Take high-quality probiotics.

I take anywhere from 25-100 billion units of probiotics on a regular basis to help reduce my candida levels and to restore good bacteria.

I love the Udo’s Choice brand of probiotics by Flora Health because they are powerful and strong probiotics that have helped me tremendously. You can take the probiotics with food and the antifungals on an empty stomach so that they do not cross paths. Again, be sure to work with a doctor before starting any treatments because everyone (and everyone’s body) is different.

3. Start an anti-candida diet.

It’s important to focus on high-quality organic green vegetables, coconut oil, raw nuts, raw seeds, organic chicken, eggs, and turkey because these are foods that will starve the yeast in your body.

I’d also advise you to avoid coffee, wine, vinegar, and sugar, along with anything that contains yeast. It’s also very important to learn how to heal your gut by eliminating foods that can negatively affect your gut such as gluten, dairy, soy, fried foods, and processed foods. You can experiment with each of these food groups to see which, if any, are causing you trouble. See my candida page for more details.

4. Talk to your doctor about alternatives to oral contraceptives, antibiotics, and/or steroids.

These drugs can destroy the good bacteria that prevent Candida from reproducing out of control in your body.
