Are you experiencing mixed emotions this Fourth of July?

If you are, you’re certainly not alone. I’ve noticed quite a few folks on social media proclaiming they have no intention of celebrating the Fourth of July this year due to the political turmoil and divisions, recent Supreme Court decisions, and other reasons.

People are feeling sad, angry, frustrated, disappointed, and yes, disgusted.

Believe me, I get it. I’m feeling those emotions too.

Still, today and most days (not gonna lie — some days are pretty darn challenging), I remain hopeful and yes, proud to be an American.

These mixed-up, all-over-the map emotions many of us are experiencing can be confusing and unsettling.

So, I guess my message tucked into this post is this:

Negative feelings are always valid too.

Regarding your feelings about the good old USA (and other things, including cancer), remember that negative feelings AND feelings of gratitude can and do co-exist.

America is a flawed country. Far from perfect.

After all, it’s made up of flawed individuals. Like me, like you, like all of us.

Hopefully, the negative feelings many of us are having, help motivate us to action. Hopefully, they help strengthen our resolve and determination to work harder — to not become complacent, to not give up, to not take the good things about America that we all cherish for granted.

To remind us that yes, the Fourth of July is indeed still a holiday worth celebrating.

I’ll wrap up with some timeless, sage words from Abraham Lincoln. I wish Mr. Lincoln could drop in and offer some counsel, but his words of experience will have to suffice:

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, cannot long retain it.

Amen to that.
