COVID-19 and Breast Cancer: What You Should Know

As many of us know, the world was recently hit with a global pandemic known as COVID-19, or better known as Coronavirus. During these uncertain times, everyone is starting to take precautions and learn more about what they can be doing to prevent contracting the virus. And if you’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer recently are are currently undergoing treatment, you may wonder how this could affect you. We wanted to take the time to answer some common questions along with providing additional resources for those who have been impacted physically, emotionally or even financially.

What Does Having Breast Cancer Mean During COVID-19?
While breast cancer and COVID-19 are not directly related, most breast cancer patients that are currently undergoing active treatment can often have a higher risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus. Those with weakened immune system are at a greater risk of contracting the virus, so its important for those who are undergoing chemotherapy or other breast cancer treatments to know their risk and take the proper precautions.
How Can I Protect Myself?
The best way to protect yourself is to practice social-distancing, washing your hands, and avoiding touching your face. Many experts, including the CDC, are encouraging everyone to practice good hygiene practices such as wiping down surfaces, cleaning your home regularly and washing your hands throughout the day.
How Will This Impact My Treatments?
With the CDC and other medical experts encouraging individuals to practice social-distancing, you may feel worried about still attending your treatments. However, hospitals and treatment facilities are taking the proper precautions to ensure their facilities remain as clean as possible. Feel free to give your local hospital or treatment center a call before arriving to ensure their updated procedures and that they are still accepting treatment appointments.

Whether you’ve been impacted physically, emotionally, or financially, there are many organizations stepping up to aid breast cancer patients and survivors during this difficult time.
