In partnership with Dentistry Online, Khalil Hussein presents Dentistry Gym. Today’s class focuses on exercises that help to prevent neck and shoulder pain in dentistry.

Neck and shoulder pain

Dentistry is tough on the neck and shoulders. Many dentists suffer from neck pain and shoulder pain as a result.

When it comes to neck pain and shoulder pain, one of the most important ways to prevent it is to build strong, mobile and flexible joints and muscles.

Muscles and joints that are resilient can withstand the stress and strain of dentistry much better than muscles and joints that aren’t.

We build stronger muscles and joints by exposing them to greater stress over time. It is important to take your time and feel the movements and the muscles involved. Doing so will help you build a great connection with your body.

When it comes to any kind of back pain or pain in general, there is often a loss of this connection with the body.

Since the brain is what generates pain, it is very important to focus not only physically but also mentally. Pushing yourself harder and harder each week will cause your body to adapt. It will help build stronger muscles and joints. This in turn will have a knock on effect. It will decrease the incidence of any pain or injuries experienced as a dentist.

This class is designed for viewers to carry it out with minimal equipment at home. We don’t use weights so these exercises are quite safe for most people.

However, before conducting any exercises please consult your GP or allied health therapist for guidance and advice about your own circumstances and whether these exercises are the right thing for you.

Always seek medical advice before starting any exercise program.
