Dentistry Online’s award winners – Thomas Crawford-Clarke 1

Dr Thomas Crawford-Clarke talks about picking up the Best Young Dentist accolade – at both the Dentistry Awards and Private Dentistry Awards.

How does it feel to have won?

It really was a complete surprise as there were some excellent dentists in my category. You enter the award hoping to win, but I certainly was not expecting it!

Did you enjoy the awards evening?

Probably a bit too much!

Why did you choose to enter the awards?

I always like a challenge and this was one I set myself in my VT year. I remember listening to a young dentist giving a talk at a VT training day nine years ago who had won Best Young Dentist. I told myself I have to enter myself at some point. It took me two attempts – but I got there!

What do you think the awards are doing to the standards within the profession?

Definitely raising them. It gives you something to aim for, in addition to trying to make your patients happy every day!

Why do you think you won?

My attitude is that you can never stop learning and improving, whether it be your clinical skills or personal attributes. By surrounding myself with people who inspire me, it drives me to keep on trying to achieve new goals, both within dentistry and life outside of peoples mouths!

Have you noticed a difference in patient numbers since winning the award?

I’ve definitely seen an increase. My current patients have also reacted really well.

Will you be entering the awards again this year?

I certainly will be!

Anything else you’d like to add?

To anyone who isn’t sure about entering, my advice would be do not hesitate and go for it. Even if you do not win, the experience in putting an entry together is a learning opportunity and when I didn’t win the first year (I came highly commended), it gave me even more determination to better myself and the hard work paid off!
