Lifeline in Action – Cancer Survivor Gets a Reason To Smile! 1

Dr. Jacob Peters loves to improve smiles. Through continued education and a passion for the work he does, he consistently goes above and beyond in doing so. Dr. Peters has been improving the smiles of patients in his community for 11 years now. He also donates his time and talents to the Minnesota Donated Dental Services (DDS) program. His first DDS patient was Patricia.

Patricia, 64, was diagnosed with lung cancer not long ago. She underwent chemo and radiation treatments, and had the lower left lobe of her lung removed. Thankfully, she is in remission, but she occasionally still has trouble breathing, and has additional medical problems that cause her pain. Furthermore, her dental health needed attention and was interfering with her overall health, but she was unable to afford the necessary treatment on her fixed income. Fortunately, Patricia was referred to the DDS program, where she was linked with Dr. Peters.

During his initial exam, Dr. Peters discovered that Patricia had only three remaining natural teeth, and her upper denture no longer fit properly. He extracted Patricia’s remaining teeth, and donated full upper and lower dentures, which were fabricated by Trachsel Dental Studio at no cost. Patricia was so happy to be able to smile again.

“I’ve never worked with such kind people in all my life. You won’t believe the smile I’ve recovered and how happy I am.”
—Patricia, DDS Patient

As a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Peters takes great pride in his ability to restore a patient’s oral health. He was glad for the opportunity to help Patricia, and to show his office staff the significance of the work they do.

“It was fun to be able to volunteer in our office. The entire staff got to see how big an impact we can make in someone’s life as dentists. I think it helps create a positive atmosphere when everyone sees the dentist volunteering their time during the workday.”
