Out of office – Jana Denzel on martial arts and his clothing line 1

Jana Denzel talks about why martial arts is more than just physical fitness and self-defence.

Please introduce yourself

Hey everyone! I’m Jana Denzel and I’m a dentist from London, with a psychology background!

What do you get up to in your spare time away from dentistry?

In my spare time away from dentistry, I run a clothing line that focuses on urban street-wear and events. Being a dentist, it’s been great to put to use my artistic skills and create innovative designer pieces. It’s also great fun!

Furthermore we donate all our profits to The Climate Reality Project. This helps to clean the earth and make it a better place for our youth (which is what our brand, ‘Adolescent Junkies’, is all about – celebrating being a youth).

I am also the co-founder of a digital marketing agency called DENSTUDIO. Well to be honest, it is actually around dentistry, because it’s a dental marketing agency! But it’s something I enjoy doing in my time away from the clinic.

Are you a foodie?

I wouldn’t say that I’m a foodie, but I think the rolls on my stomach would disagree! My summer body has really turned into a dad-bod over this last month. The ‘eat out to help out scheme’ had me and my girlfriend out multiple times – almost every day!

To be honest my favourite food has to be authentic Tamil food. The spices and flavour are out of this world. If you haven’t tried it yet, you definitely should!

Are you into any sport? If so, what sport?

Since I was a child, my father made me enrol in karate classes. Martial arts was a huge part of my life when I was younger. I studied it for several years and have even taken part in international competitions and have won a few awards.

However, more than physical fitness and self defence, it’s a great art that teaches self-discipline. I truly believe being able to control your reactions and emotions is one of the most useful traits a person can have. It’s a trait that will make things a lot easier for you in your professional and personal life. But it’s definitely been a few years since I’ve last been trained!

What type of television/movies do you like. Any guilty pleasures?

Coincidently, I love anything with Denzel Washington in! Him and Will Smith – everything they’re in is a classic. I can also binge-watch some Netflix shows for hours on end! Too many good shows to list, but once I get hooked it’s definitely a guilty pleasure!

Do you like to travel and do your hobbies take you anywhere in particular?

I love to travel! Unfortunately, I haven’t gone outside of Europe much yet, but I would love to! It’s not the coolest thing in the world, but from childhood to now, I’m still a big Disney fan and that has taken me to visit Disneyland Paris. Perhaps one too many times than I should!

Why is it important to have hobbies away from your profession?

I find hobbies are so important in giving my mind some time off. It helps to relieve the stresses of every day life by keeping you engaged in something you enjoy and it’s a great chance to socialise and meet new people.

For me, I love creating content and networking with people – that’s my chill time!
