Treatment days can be long. And for most people at the start of their journey, you have months ahead of you filled with appointments and treatments. It can often be hard to know what to expect. Going through your treatments and overall breast cancer journey can be emotionally challenging. Yet in some ways, it can be a time to take advantage of “free” moments with loved ones when you aren’t able to do anything else except for sit. While you may have never expected to be preparing yourself for days filled with treatment plans, you can always choose to to make the best of it.

So, let’s talk about what you should bring with you to make your time as pleasant as possible, here are 10 things you need to get you through treatment days sanely.

1. Your favorite book

You can never go wrong with a good book. Once you dive in you can get lost for hours in reading and before you know it you’re all done!

2. Headphones

Listen to your favorite playlist, podcast or simply use them as noise cancellation while you catch some Zzz’s!

3. Journal

You can use this for so many reasons. Tracking your treatment, journaling your feelings, jotting down important items or to-do tasks for the following days in case you have a case of chemo brain.

4. Crosswords or puzzles

These are always a great way to pass time and stimulate your brain as well!

5. Stress relief coloring books

One of my favorite down times, it’s never a bad time to bring out your inner child and get to coloring!

6. Plenty of liquids to stay hydrated

Water is essential, especially during treatment. I recommend taking a large jug or hydro flask to avoid having to constantly refill it.

7. Your most comfy and loose-fitting clothing

As mentioned, you’ll be sitting for a long period of time so make sure to go as comfortable as you can! Wearing loose tops also allows your healthcare professionals to access your port more easily

8. Your favorite blanket

we all know how cold hospitals can get so make sure not to forget your favorite blanket to keep your warm and bring you comfort!

9. Light snacks

While your treatment center typically provides beverages and snacks, it’s always a great idea to take some of your own favorite snacks to avoid having your stomach be completely empty. You can even take snacks that may help combat nausea such as ginger candies!

10. Personal items

Regardless of the situation it’s always a huge help to have a small bag of personal items that could come in handy. Hand sanitizer, lotion, lip balm, your medications, gum and much more!
