Weight Loss: Spot Reduction

Myth or Truth ?

Hello People,

How is your work from home coming along? I feel super lazy but have a lot of work on cards ! Why is that we feel sleepy only when we have lots of work to do ? This reminds me that I felt that sleeping is the best activity in a person’s life , especially during exams , LOL :P.

This post is to all my dear readers who have been writing through emails n Facebook messages. Some of the queries that I receive are –

“How to reduce belly fat ?”

“My arms are saggy and I have fat near underarms. How to reduce ? “

“I have big hips and thighs . Please suggest a few exercises to reduce “

…and the list goes on !

These queries fall under “Spot Reduction” . Spot reduction means targeted fat loss, and it’s been discussed since a few decades now.

Weight Loss Spot Reduction Myth or Truth

Spot Reduction Myth or Truth ?

Some people say , I lost from xyz place ! Hence, they believe that it is possible to lose part from a particular part of the body. We have different body shapes like apple or pear. When we are heavy, that body shape is not seen. When we lose weight, the body shape shows up. People think that they have lost from a targeted area but that’s not true !

There are now machines which target the outer thigh, the inner thigh, the upper abs , the lower abs, the upper arms , so on and so forth ! I call these machines as Fiction ;).

In a study to find out whether Spot Reduction Myth or Truth, the fat deposits in the arms of high-level tennis players were compared. The investigators stated that if spot reduction worked, the playing arm of a tennis player should have been less fat than the inactive arm. This prediction was not true !

There is nothing called as Spot reduction. Weight loss, or rather Fat loss depends on genetics, sex (hormones), and age. When overall body fat is reduced, you will lose fat in any particular area. Doing exercises that target a certain region does NOT cause fat loss in that particular body region. For example, doing excess abs exercise does NOT lead to preferential fat loss in the abdominal region. I don’t deny the fact that abs exercise will help you in toning. But abs exercise ALONE will not help you achieve a flat tummy. Therefore, fat loss is not site specific.

Even if you lose fat from one part of your body, your body will balance out the fat levels. So, spot reduction is a MYTH.

Yes, everyone’s body has its own way of losing or gaining fat. Generally, the first area to get fat, or the last area to become lean, is the midsection ( for most men and some women) or hips and thighs( for most women and some men) . I gain first on my face, followed by tummy and arms 😛 , but I never denied being an exception :P.

So my friends, now you know whether Spot Reduction Myth or Truth !
